“DISRUPT_”: Netherland’s first physical NFT exhibition highlighting queer experiences from around the globe.

The exhibition opens for the public viewing on July 8th and had an official event launch on July 16th the Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

All the old assumptions of the art market and art culture were thrown into chaotic, creative uncertainty. Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), a form of digital token, came as a force to be reckoned with, and expanded - to an unprecedented extend - the ability for creatives from any background or geographical location to monetise their creativity. As the NFT space matures culturally, diversity starts flourishing, allowing queer creatives to empower each other and to re-claim their cultural contributions to the global art scene.

“DISRUPT_” features a vast selection of 20+ artists and a variety of media forms that span from 3D animations and generative art, to illustration, photography, music and performance art. With an all star line up of creators that include names such IX_Shells, Jason Ebeyer, Chewy Stolls among others; the exhibition explores the varied meanings queer art holds when operating in different national, religious, and ethnic contexts.

As the curatorial team explains: “Limiting our understanding of queer art too closely within the contexts of Euramerican socio-political events of the 20th century, excludes the varied practices of LGBTQI+ individuals beyond those geographic borders, as well as various conceptions of queerness across cultures.” Art representing queer experiences can be traced throughout human history from Egypt, Greece, China, Rome, Peru, India, Mexico, sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the medieval, Renaissance, and early modern periods. Nonetheless, the main perception of ‘queer art’ today, seems to only account for the past 50 years and it mainly focuses on movements that took place in the United States of America and the United Kingdom.

‘DISRUPT’ shakes the limited perception of queerness and creates a space where there’s no confining of the artist’s identity and self expression. Going against practises of queer erasure that have been normalised by art institutions and gatekeepers, the exhibition celebrates inspiring artists who redefine the boundaries of their creativity by disrupting societal norms and rules. Through bridging Web3 technologies (blockchain) with physical art, ‘DISRUPT’ breaks the barriers of what was only reserved for a certain, elite individuals.

“DISRUPT_” is curated by GlitchOfMind (Artist / Curator), YUYU (Artist / Curator), and Sixela (Curator) and it is powered by Het Nieuwe Instituut and NXTHING WORLD (Global Creative Agency).
